The Space Between Us: A Methodological Framework for Researching Bonding and Proxemics in Situated Group-Agent Interactions
This paper introduces a multimethod framework for studying spatial and social dynamics in real-world group-agent interactions with socially interactive agents. Drawing on proxemics and bonding theories, the method combines subjective self-reports and objective spatial tracking. Applied in two field studies in a museum ( N = 187) with a robot and a virtual agent, the paper addresses the challenges in aligning human perception and behavior. We focus on presenting an open source, scalable, and field-tested toolkit for future studies.
Leveraging LLM Agents and Digital Twins for Fault Handling in Process Plants

Advances in Automation and Artificial Intelligence continue to enhance the autonomy of process plants in handling various operational scenarios. However, certain tasks, such as fault handling, remain challenging, as they rely heavily on human expertise. This highlights the need for systematic, knowledge-based methods. To address this gap, we propose a methodological framework that integrates Large Language Model (LLM) agents with a Digital Twin environment. The LLM agents continuously interpret system states and initiate control actions, including responses to unexpected faults, with the goal of returning the system to normal operation. In this context, the Digital Twin acts both as a structured repository of plant-specific engineering knowledge for agent prompting and as a simulation platform for the systematic validation and verification of the generated corrective control actions. The evaluation using a mixing module of a process plant demonstrates that the proposed framework is capable not only of autonomously controlling the mixing module, but also of generating effective corrective actions to mitigate a pipe clogging with only a few reprompts.
Challenge-Device-Synthesis: A multi-disciplinary approach for the development of social innovation competences for students of Artificial Intelligence

The advent of Artificial Intelligence is expected to imply profound changes in the short-term. It is therefore imperative for Academia, and particularly for the Computer Science scope, to develop cross-disciplinary tools that bond AI developments to their social dimension. To this aim, we introduce the Challenge-Device-Synthesis methodology (CDS), in which a specific challenge is presented to the students of AI, who are required to develop a device as a solution for the challenge. The device becomes the object of study for the different dimensions of social transformation, and the conclusions addressed by the students during the discussion around the device are presented in a synthesis piece in the shape of a 10-page scientific paper. The latter is evaluated taking into account both the depth of analysis and the level to which it genuinely reflects the social transformations associated with the proposed AI-based device. We provide data obtained during the pilot for the implementation phase of CDS within the subject of Social Innovation, a 6-ECTS subject from the 6th semester of the Degree of Artificial Intelligence, UAB-Barcelona. We provide details on temporalisation, task distribution, methodological tools used and assessment delivery procedure, as well as qualitative analysis of the results obtained.
An HCAI Methodological Framework: Putting It Into Action to Enable Human-Centered AI

Human-centered AI (HCAI), as a design philosophy, advocates prioritizing humans in designing, developing, and deploying intelligent systems, aiming to maximize the benefits of AI technology to humans and avoid its potential adverse effects. While HCAI has gained momentum, the lack of guidance on methodology in its implementation makes its adoption challenging. After assessing the needs for a methodological framework for HCAI, this paper first proposes a comprehensive and interdisciplinary HCAI methodological framework integrated with seven components, including design goals, design principles, implementation approaches, design paradigms, interdisciplinary teams, methods, and processes. THe implications of the framework are also discussed. This paper also presents a "three-layer" approach to facilitate the implementation of the framework. We believe the proposed framework is systematic and executable, which can overcome the weaknesses in current frameworks and the challenges currently faced in implementing HCAI. Thus, the framework can help put it into action to develop, transfer, and implement HCAI in practice, eventually enabling the design, development, and deployment of HCAI-based intelligent systems.

Using machine learning and natural language processing to measure consumer reviews for product attribute insights
Researchers from Western University, SUNY Buffalo State College, University of Cincinnati, and City University of Hong Kong published a new paper in the Journal of Marketing that presents a methodological framework for managers to extract and monitor information related to products and their attributes from consumer reviews. Understanding how concrete product attributes form higher-level benefits for consumers can benefit various corporate teams. Concrete, or "engineered attributes" refer to technical specifications and product features. For example, in the context of tablet computers, such attributes include RAM, CPU, weight, and screen resolution. Understanding how combinations of these lower-level attributes form higher-level benefits, or "meta-attributes," for consumers, such as Hardware and Connectivity, can provide managers with actionable insights.
